Rychmburk Castle

The medieval Rychmburk castle is located 5 km from the town of Skuteč. It lies in the municipality of Předhradí, on a promontory above the steep valley of the Krounka River and the Lešany Stream.
It was built in the gothic style around 1300 and later renovated in the renaissance and partially the baroque styles. The history of the castle is distinguished by its remarkable number of owners. In the 14th and 15th centuries, Rychmburk was bound to the famous House of Wartenberg, as well as to the names of Arnošt of Pardubice and the poet Smil Flaška of Pardubice. In the 16th century, it became the property of the House of Wallenstein and later of the House of Berk of Dubá and Lipá.
The estate belonged to the Choceň branch of the Kinský family throughout the entire 18th century. This aristocratic house took care of not only the development of the castle, but also of the entire immediate region. After 1945, the castle was used as a home for senior citizens and the mentally ill. It now belongs to the Pardubice Region, which opened it to the public for the first time in 70 years in 2021. It is therefore a relatively unknown novelty that is waiting for you to visit.

What can you see at Rychmburk?

The castle’s dominant feature is a 30 m high tower, which it is possible to climb. The interior includes the beautiful period-appointed house of the estate administrator, while there is also an exhibition of the torturer’s art in the cellar for the bold at heart. If you prefer something more pleasant, there is an exhibition of regional beer brewing and the upper floor includes an exhibition of historical prams and dolls. Lovers of romanticism are invited to take a stroll in the adjacent castle gardens.
