Did Princesses Live Here?

Did Princesses Live Here?

Castles and chateaus are synonymous with legends, myths and also… fairy-tales! Stories about beautiful princesses and brave knights who overcome obstacles, after which they all lived happily ever after, as fairy-tales usually go. Some chateaus and castles are even today ideally suited for the life of fairy-tale characters. Go visit them, and revisit your childhood during the tours…

Z pohádky do pohádky

Bouzov Castle

This is one of the most fairy-taliest castles in Czechia, used as a set for movies and TV shows full of princesses and knights. The original Gothic castle was founded by Knight Búz of Búzov in the early 14th century. The castle’s current form of a romantic residence with crenellations, oriels, gun ports, and gargoyles dates back to an extensive redevelopment in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Náměšť na Hané Chateau

Rooms at Náměšť na Hané are cut out to be occupied by princesses and their ladies-in-waiting. They are furnished by colourful Meissen porcelain, playful Rococo furniture, and romantic paintings in golden frames. You can also see a golden ceremonial carriage there, one that would suit Cinderella for her journey to her fateful ball… And you can even become part of a fairy-tale, as the chateau regularly organises evening tours called “From One Fairy-Tale to Another”.

Náměšť na Hané Chateau, built by Count Ferdinand von Harrach in the 1760s, has a unique layout – it is surrounded by a round park with a road, and linden avenues projecting from the park to all four sides.

Black Tower in Drahanovice

Looking at this tower, many of you will certainly recollect beautiful Rapunzel. She could easily let her long yellow hair down from the very top of the tower where she was held by a sorceress.

The tower was once part of a Gothic citadel from the late 13th century. It originally had only three storeys, one storey less than today. The citadel was rebuilt in the 16th century, including the tower, to which another storey was added and the individual floors were connected by an outside spiral staircase. The façade was decorated by black-and-white sgraffito – hence probably the name “Black Tower”.

Helfštýn Castle

Let’s not forget brave knights in shining armour. One of the largest castles in our country, Helfštýn could be a perfect retreat for them. Whether knights in service to the king, or robber-knights, the site was perfect for their training as well as storage of weapons and all necessary equipment. Maybe it’s not a coincidence that according to a legend, this castle was founded by a robber-knight, Helfried of Linava, probably in the last quarter of the 13th century and served as a monumental defensive fortress for the Moravian Gate Valley for centuries.

Tajemství za dveřmi

Moszna Chateau

A genuine fairy-tale chateau, Moszna boasts unique architectural elements. It is a romantic residence from the late-18th century, which is supposed to evoke a medieval castle. You can count 99 towers and 365 mysterious chambers there, waiting for you to explore them. In the spring, when azaleas are in bloom, the chateau’s surroundings turn into a magical garden. You can also stay overnight at the chateau – it offers hotel services. And its restaurant serves a number of local delicacies.

Książ Castle

It is the largest castle of Lower Silesia and the third-largest in Poland, behind Malbork and Wawel in Krakow. The chateau was originally a fortress on a steep, rocky promontory. According to a legend, it was built by Knight Frederyk as early as in the 10th century.

The majestic castle still hides many secrets from its long and turbulent history. You can lift the veil of some of them during a tour.
